This kind of metal has traditionally always been used to make tools for personal use such as ploughs, knives, axes etc however with the changing trends over the last few decades artisans have given this art form a new life to create beautiful and ethnic home decorative which suit the urban lifestyles.

The artisans belong to the Lohar (blacksmith) community in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district Chhattisgarh is a state which is very rich in creativity and laborious art forms using all kinds of metal and Loha Shilp or the use of wrought iron to create artifacts and figurines is one of the very thriving industries of this place.

Moving away from age old methods where the iron was extracted from the ores, new age artisans have deployed feasible options of using recycled scrap iron to make these products. The general essence of these products has always been the depiction of typical village scenes and lifetsyles. Similar to the the Dhokra art this again is a time consuming and laborious process where the iron ore is heated in the furnace and made malleable and then beaten with hammer and tongs to get the desired shape and design.

Here again all the artwork used is complete handmade without the use of modern machinery. There are some very exclusive pieces which are also made with a single sheet without any joints. Wrought iron is now extensively used to make numerous home decor products such as figurines, frames, table pieces, wall art and so on.
